This is an instruction for a new Mac user on how to activate Persian support on OS X
This site is not very English friendly because it is geared to Right to Left writing but if you post your message in English, it will appear readable so don't be shy in doing so
You don't need to install or download anything in order to be able to write in Farsi
Open your "System Preferences", then go to "international". You can start by "Language" tab and click on "Edit..." you'll see the list of languages selected or not selected. You can deselect languages you don't need and when you go down the list, you'll find "Farsi" (in Farsi!). Select it and then click "OK". This is not for writing or reading Farsi. This is to tell your computer to understand and use characters that belong to this language, when organizing and sorting words that contain these character
Now you are back to main view. You see the list of the languages you selected on the left
On the top, click "Input Menu" tab. Here you have a list of keyboards of different languages. In this list you have two keyboard layouts for Farsi: "Persian" and "Persian-ISIRI 2901". The first one is Apple standard Persian keyboard layout. The second one is Islamic Republic Persian standard, vastly used on PCs. You may select both and try both to see which one fits you better
I suggest you also select two items in that list: "Character Palette" and "Keyboard Viewer". The first one is not very useful for a new user like you but you WILL use it later on. The second one is particularly useful for a new user. This is the picture of a keyboard with characters mapped to that keyboard. If you want to know on your Persian or Persian ISIRI keyboard which character is on which key, you absolutely need the Keyboard Viewer
Now you can close "System Preferences". If you don't see an icon (a flag) on the right of your Menu Bar, log out and log in again (or restart). You should be able to see the flag of your default keyboard layout (if US, American flag). Click on it and you'll see the other keyboard layouts you selected and also "Character Palette" and "Keyboard Viewer"
Now select your Persian keyboard, open "keyboard viewer" and a new document on "TextEdit" and play!... don't forget to choose Format > Text > Writing Direction> Right to Left. You can do the same by "Control Click" on TextEdit document and follow the contextual menu
Since you are new to Mac, I explained in very detailed fashion but really the whole thing is very easy to do
Good luck,
Behnam
